"Herndon's always been a staple for Northern Virginia." That's what Travis Loan, the regional franchise representative bringing Beignets & Brew to town, told a reporter this month about why his company picked Herndon for its first Northern Virginia store. It's a nice line, and it's not wrong. But the more interesting fact isn't that one beignet shop chose Herndon. It's that a second, unrelated chain made the identical calculation about the identical shopping center six weeks later, and that both decisions landed in the same season downtown Herndon's longest-running free concert series is about to hit a round number nobody plans for on purpose.
Two things don't usually share a clock: a strip mall's tenant roster and a town's summer concert log. This year on Elden Street, they do.
Two chains, one plaza, six weeks apart
Beignets & Brew opened its doors at 348 Elden Street inside Herndon Centre on the morning of Friday, August 7, with a 7 a.m. ribbon cutting that included Herndon Mayor Keven LeBlanc. It's the New Orleans-style chain's first location in Northern Virginia, a fact the company confirmed when it first announced the Herndon build-out back in May.
Barely two weeks before that opening, The Burn reported that Masala Pizza & Bitezz had signed a roughly 2,000-square-foot lease in the same shopping center, taking the space next to IHOP that most recently held a Dickey's Barbecue Pit. It's the chain's second Northern Virginia location, following a South Riding-area store that opened in January 2025.

Neither company was reacting to the other. Beignets & Brew scouted the site in spring. Masala Pizza & Bitezz was still finalizing paperwork when the beignet shop cut its ribbon. Two separate corporate real estate teams, working from two separate spreadsheets, arrived at the same six-tenant strip center off Elden Street within about six weeks of each other. That's not a trend story about Herndon getting "a new restaurant." That's two outside companies independently reading the same block as worth betting on right now.
The rest of the block filled in around them
Herndon Centre wasn't the only address doing this. A few blocks up Elden Street, 246 Thai Street opened in March at 171 Elden Street, offering a full Thai menu including several curries and both tom-yum and tom-kha soups. Panda Express finished its own long-anticipated build-out and opened for business on August 8, per The Burn. And Fairfax County's own tourism office noted that Ornery Beer Co. Public House is now serving house-brewed beer alongside pub food in Herndon, one of the county's picks for restaurants worth trying in 2026.
The Town of Herndon's own economic development office keeps a running list of what's opened, and the entries from this stretch go well past food:

Elden Street between roughly downtown and Herndon Centre has picked up a pastry shop, a pizza concept with a South Asian menu twist, a Thai kitchen, a fast-casual Mexican spot, a chicken salad chain, a food truck, a pottery studio, and a martial arts gym inside the same few months. That's the kind of density that changes what a Tuesday errand run looks like, not just what Friday dinner options exist.
Downtown's music calendar is running its own math
While Elden Street was filling in, the town's two free outdoor concert series were on opposite ends of their own timelines.
Town Square Tuesdays, now in its second summer, wrapped its 2026 season on August 18 with a set from Crooked Sparrow at Town Hall Square. It's a young tradition as these things go, born last year, and this season's run of Tuesday evenings is now in the books.
Friday Night Live, the older of the two, played its August 28 show with Stealing Savanah, a five-piece touring act out of southern New Jersey that plays more than 200 dates a year. According to Herndon Rocks, the September 4 show marks the series' 500th scheduled performance. That's not a milestone anyone engineered for this particular week. It's just where the count landed, and it landed the same season Elden Street was adding tenants faster than most residents could keep track of.
Thursday mornings had their own smaller tradition running in parallel: Farmers' Market Fun Days, which paired downtown's farmers market with a kids' feature act, most recently Groovy Nate on August 20, according to the Town of Herndon's events page.
What this actually changes about the next couple of weeks
None of this was coordinated. A national pastry chain's site-selection team doesn't check in with the Parks and Recreation Department before signing a lease, and the volunteers who've kept Friday Night Live going for decades weren't tracking Masala Pizza & Bitezz's expansion plans.
